Set in Soweto, South Africa, this Oscar-winner centers on 19-year-old Tsotsi (Presley Chweneyagae) who deals drugs, steals, and scavenges to get. Themes
Religion: religion is a major theme threw out the entire story. Mostly everyone and every event event relates back to Christianity in some way. The baby represents the new born baby Jesus from the bible. He brings innocents and peace to people around him. Miriam represents the Virgin Mary. She loves and cares about everyone which is why she wants to take the baby from Tsotsi. Tsotsi is joseph, because he takes care of everyone.
Redemption: redemption is most apparent when Tsotsi is talking to Isaiah about god. Tsotsi learns that threw the power of good and religion he can redeem himself. He can move past what his live is now and become a contributing member to society. We also notice that tsotsi redeems himself while talking to Boston after beating him up. He first takes him home, and then takes care of him long enough for them to talk. They talk about why Tsotsi is changing his ways and doesn’t want to be thug, and tsotsi asks him questions about live. Boston tells him he should go talk to Isaiah.
Survival: survival is developed in the story because tsotsi is a young boy living alone and being a thug. He learns to take care of himself which is most likely why he does not value other people’s lives. He lives to protect himself and only care about himself. Once he gets the baby his means of survival change. He has to care for someone other than himself for the first time in the novel. He learns what he has to do by trusting others and letting people into his live which is something he is not accustomed too. Tsotsi is a thug, someone who kills for money and suffers no remorse. But he starts changing when circumstance finds him in possession of a baby, which acts as a catalyst in his life. A chain of events leads him to regain memories of his childhood and discover why he is the way he is. The novel sets parameters of being “human” and brings these to the consideration of the reader. This is because he doesn’t know the answers to questions about his past and instinctually fears memories, the reason of which is revealed later. The effect that this baby has on him is life changing, because rather than abandoning it he cares for it.
